The origin of Swedish massage is the ancient classic massage from Greece.
The person who made this old massage-technique popular in modern time was Mr. Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839), a certified gymnastics instructor from Sweden who became acquainted with massage during his studies at the university in Copenhagen and at an early stage realized the advantages of massage to help people to get more healthy.
He refined the technique and began to introduce it in Sweden and later in other countries as well. This is the reason why this techniqe nowadays is called “Swedish massage” around the world.
Today the Swedish massage is even more developed and refined, principally by Mr. Hans Axelson who founded his own school in Stockholm in 1962.
Swedish classical massage is a technique in which the masseur is working direct on the skin by using oil or a cream. By doing effleurage, petrissage, strokes and slidings the masseur can in a very soft and efficient way stimulate the flow of blood and lymph and reach the deep tissue to release the muscles from stress and pain.
